Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, are the top three killers of all Americans. The three major components which aid in the rapid demise of the population are as follows; a high fat diet, being obese or overweight, and the lack of physical activity. A diet high in fat consists of frequent and on-going consumption of foods with a lot of cholesterol. Cholesterol is a soft and waxy substance that builds up in the arteries. This build up is caused by saturated fats which are found in abundance in over processed foods. Research shows 70 percent of all cancers can be prevented by losing weight, increased exercise, replacing red meat with vegetables, and putting an end to smoking tobacco. Lifestyle changes are key in ensuring the maintenance of a cancer free body in the US. The strongest evidence to support this claim is to look at the country’s cancer rate in comparison to others around the world. The American Cancer Society Surveillance Research report roughly estimates 1,419,000 new cases of cancer annually. In fact, new immigrants within one lifespan can see their cancer rate increase drastically. American diet and culture has a direct correlation to the development of new un-inherited cancer cases. A culture infiltrated with images of cheeseburgers, hot dogs, apple pies, cigarette smoke, lounging in excess, as all a part of the allure of being a citizen. Many countries that have westernized have adopted these ways and consequently have seen their cancer rates increase dramatically.

Obesity promotes the production of cancer; heavier people in relationship to leaner people have a substantially higher rate of dying from cancer. There are to two theories to support. The first theory is to note that obese people seem to circulate more insulin throughout the blood. The insulin acts as a pacifier and protects cancer cells by immobilizing cells ability to active its “suicide genes”, thus giving cancer the ability to live longer and spread. The second theory has to do with the excess fat cells which release inflammation signals into the blood. The inflammation signal comes into contact with the cancer cells, and stimulates its growth. Physical exercise lowers the concentration of insulin in the blood, inflammation, and if maintained can lower your weight. As mentioned in the opening, the key to thriving free from type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer is to remain active and aware. Physically, in terms of the body, and mentally when making lifestyle choices which will save and preserve the quality of your life.
